Being a friend of the environment should be rewarded, at least that’s what Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven in Sweden thinks. They now encourage their costumers to bring their own coffee cups. As a reward for doing just that, costumers will be rewarded a discount on their coffee.
In Sweden and most of Europe, retail stores are obliged to charge costumers for plastic bags. Now, Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven in Sweden has decided to start charging their costumers for the disposable cups that usually comes for free when you buy a coffee. Or more precise, if you bring your coffee cup, you’ll get a 3 sek discount (approx. € 0,3). Disposable products, especially the once made of plastic, are a real danger to our planet. These products infect our oceans and damages our nature. Therefor, EU had decided to work hard to decrease disposable products in their member countries.
This campaign by Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven is a collaboration with the foundation ”Håll Sverige Rent” (Keep Sweden Clean). The goal is to decrease sales of disposable coffee cups with 500 000 cups, only this year. These numbers make up about 5% of the total revenue that comes from these chains total coffee sales. Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven are the first two chains to join this campaign which started in may this year.
Mariette Kristenson, CEO of Reitan Convenience Sweden believes that this campaign can help Swedes to look at disposable products in a new way and hopefully stop using them. The stores have also started selling a new kind of cups for those costumer who still wishes to buy a disposable cup. These new cups are more environmental friendly and has a 25% lower impact on the environment.
But that’s not all, from now on, all coffee sold in these convenience stores will be organic and UTZ-certified.
