In every kitchen there is always one or more cutting boards, made of materials such as wood, plate, marble, stone and glass. To take the best care of your food, it is very important to have good hygiene when preparing it. For example, you can use different colors on your cutting boards to help keep them apart. It is very important to take care of your cutting boards in the right way, we will go through that in this post.

  • Wooden cutting boards can be lightly sanded and re-oiled to make them look like new. Oiling your cutting board reduces the absorption capacity of the wood and also reduces the risk of small cracks in the board.
  • Care should always be taken to clean the cutting board frequently, but the wood is not suitable for machine washing. The amount of water and the high temperature dries out the wood and makes it prone to cracking.
  • A wooden cutting board is best dried upside down, so you can be sure that the water will run off and not form small puddles on the cutting surface. However, you can throw your plastic or stone board in the dishwasher to make sure the bacteria are gone!
  • To disinfect your wooden cutting board, you can rub or spray it with white vinegar or vinegar, an easy and natural way. Take a spray bottle, spray on and wipe off. You can also cover the board with salt, preferably coarse salt, then scrub it with a root brush, leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse it off. This is a perfect germicidal cleaner for your cutting board.

Getting a plastic cutting board like new is not as easy, if it has been used daily it should be replaced about twice a year. Sharp knives are all very well, but if you make nicks and scratches in cutting boards (usually on softer materials such as plastic), a bacteria bomb is formed. Bacteria thrive in these places and it's difficult to get them completely clean.

If you are not sure which cutting board to use for what, you can choose plastic cutting boards for meat, fish and seafood and wood for vegetables and bread, or you can find another strategy that suits you. The most important thing is that you know what applies to each cutting board!

As said, your cutting board is a major tool in your cooking and it should be fresh and clean for the rest of the food to be hygienic, and therefore last longer!

Psst, don't forget that your cutting board, e.g. in wood or marble, is a perfect interior detail and works great for serving!
